Took the kart out for a ride

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They're not stock. The 5.5 has a cam, valve springs, carb and hollowed muffler. The governor is completely removed. Split the case and took the gear and shaft out. Gearing is 12/60. Tires are 4.10/3.5/5 slicks. Clutch has stock springs.

What class racing do you do?? Running a jackshaft? so ur running 5in tires? Are u just running clutch to rear wheel? So u have a gx160 with cam springs and carb.... Stock rod? flywheel? Ur spinning 5500 maybe 6000 rpms with what you listed. Correct?

Class...err.. amateur to very amateur. haha. I used to race enduros (cars, not bikes). A bunch of my racing buddies and I basically sat down and made a list of rules for building a kart. All same motor, same tires, no live axle, rear engine, etc. We buy tires by the case and split them up. Usually kill two per night.

Yes, it is a GX160. Stock crank and flywheel. I want to do a flywheel, but I am already cheating with the cam, so I think a flywheel will be too obvious. haha I'm not sure what the R's are exactly, but your estimate sounds pretty close.

lol. oh. with that engine i was wondering what you where racing in. no one would let you in.

I fully support removal of gov(I nearly have gotten banned at my mini bike forum for this) on a stock engine but you are pushing even my support. stock you might get 5500 rpms if your lucky before valve float. I doubt ull get above 5k though. ur rig may reach 6500(possible but your gonna have to push it HARD) or maybe slightly more if you push it really hard. Here is the issue. the flywheel has been known to fly apart at rpms as low as 5800 though usually they give out around 7k. rods around the same too. Your gonna lose your engine soon. if your modding you need billet rod and flywheel. not trying to be nancy know-it-all i just want to help a fellow small engine person :D

I ran your numbers and could only reach that you only got to speeds just below 20 mph. do you have something i dont know about??

Hmmm... I don't think I forgot anything. At the end of the video, I do a walk around of the kart. Take a look at it, see if I forgot anything. Those numbers don't seem to quite map out. Next time there is good weather, I am going to get someone to follow me in a car and I'll post a video.

Thanks for the info! I have two seasons on the motor, so if it comes apart now, it won't be a huge loss. Still cheaper than racing cars. haha. Maybe with the next motor, I'll go all out. I bet my heavy stock flywheel is what is keeping it from over reving and blowing now. I always get nervous when I hit a slick spot or get too sideways and it over revs. Worst so far has just been head gaskets. I can live with that. haha. You don't come off as a know-it-all. I appreciate the advice.

run the numbers and see but i dont think i missed anything.

i think i just BLEW my gov.... yeah.....
it was adjusted to give me more rpms but i was playing with the mini bike yesterday(having carb probs) and i reved it up high. dont worry about over reving. As long as ur flywheel and rob hold ull just hit valve float which as long as you dont hit alot ull be fine.

u guys should look into running gx200 clones. u can get them for as little as 90 bucks brand new, parts are plentiful and cheap. a few hundred and you can be pushing 9 or 10 hp easy. heck if i remember correctly just yank off the gov and u gain .7 hp(its available at a higher rpm than it is gov at). re-jet them, add a header and mill ur head and ull be pushing 8 or 9 easy.

I just did the calculator and got 34 mph at 5500 rpm. Did you put in 5 for tire size? Overall diameter is 10.5. If you do 5 inches it comes out to 16 mph.

One guy runs a knock off motor. It is a Jangdong or something like that. It has been holding up pretty well. It looks exactly like a Honda, too. I think he said it was like $120 shipped. Not a bad deal.

A thought on your carb... Did you drain the gas for the winter? The gas is so crappy these days, it will gum up the carb after a couple months. I drained everything this winter. Lawn mower, chainsaw, kart, leaf blower... So far the kart and blower fired up without a problem. The kart started on the first pull with an empty carb. Lol.

oh. thats where my mistake was

my issue is my float. is lets gas just pour into the carb. i need a rebuld kit. i got it running but its not perfect. i just cant fill my tank.

the engines im talking about are harbor freight, 6.5hp. ull love them!!
