Top 5 factors that determine Turnover Rate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"On the other hand I have had success with tanks in the 4 to 5 metre range (13-16 foot long) with a turnover of once an hour due to the lower per liter bioload."

1X turnover; That's heresy! Careful you may get exiled from this forum. This is a 10x to 20x turnover community...lol

Yeah, everyone is like a bunch of lemmings. Just following everyone else because it is the thing to do. Followers following followers. Until that first one falls over the cliff into the sea...

It's refreshing when someone is willing to post their results that went against the grain. A free thinker. A lemming that watched all the others fall into the sea and then said to himself, "Screw that!" :D

In my experience...

It is essential that we have enough water movement to prevent our water from becoming stale/stagnant... which takes very little...

Beyond that, the importance of water movement is moving waste into filter intakes. Some people choose not to put much importance on this and rely on weekly maintence to manually remove waste...

Personally, I like to have my filters pull out the poo. This way on the weeks where I do not have the time, energy or desire to get elbow deep in every tank I can just siphon off a bit of water and replace it.

I say constantly that relying on any "X or XX times turnover" is simply a rule of thumb and is meant only for those not interested or willing to really understand filtration.

If we claim to be trying to actually understand filtration we have to consider the details and not try to ignore them by following a rule of thumb...

It seems to many people want be filtration experts without taking the time to gain filtration education/experience... instead of trying to make filtration dumber make yourself smarter! :P

Maybe the "community" members need to ask themselves why they keep experiencing that falling sensation, and is that a sea breeze I smell...

Gleaning truth from a forum is an art.

Over 90% of what I read on forums is either incorrect, inaccurate, or a company pushing their products ever so discretely. The company moles are the ones who try to get the "lemmings" marching in a certain direction. Once they get them going on their path, they have to periodically add product reinforcement posts to get them over the cliff (i.e., buy their product).

I work for a computer company and have been thinking about creating multiple screen names and "discretely" push my company's products on the computer forums.

Of course, pushing a product without making the readers suspicious, is also an art. If my company offered to pay me per post, and added a bonus if I was clever in my methodology, I might be tempted.

However, I think the Internet will eventually render itself irrelevant once enough people realize how much misinformation it is spreading.
