Thanks for the recommendations. The decision has been made. My girlfriend's favorite color is pink, so as soon as she saw me looking at the picture when I looked up the info on the pink tail, she wanted it. LOL Not a bad looking fish either. :)

So I have been looking into the pink tail some more and have some concerns. The first being jumping. I have read on all sites that this fish is a jumper. My canopy is entirely enclosed with the exception of a 2-3" gap from the top of the tank to the bottom part of the back canopy. Will this be a cause for serious concern?

The second thing is aggression. I have read mixed reviews between it being very aggressive to it only being predatory aggressive with fish under 3-4". What is the common aggression level like for those that keep them? Does anyone think it will pick on my geo red heads (not worried about my severums as they hold their own)?

I am also still interested in what people think of the flagtail. I posted some questions above this. If anyone can answer some of those for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Redtail/Pinktail chalceus are cool fish, though typically eat Anything that will fit in their mouths. I would classify it under predatory aggression more so than just aggressive. Be careful with similar looking fish/silvery. I've seen some snap and kill small tinfoils and others do fine. Overall a sweet fish that needs an eye kept on it.

I have a flagtail that grew up with some altifrons and orange heads. The Flagtail is now about 7" or so. He is peaceful for the most part. Tank mates are 3 orange heads, all abut 4", and six altifrons, ranging from 4" - 7". They are in a 125.

I tried the flagtail in my 180 with 7 festae all about 3" and they picked on him. So he went back in with the geos.

My Flagtail grew very quickly, up until the 6" mark. Then slowed down. He only grew the last inch over 3/4 of a year, and the first 2"-6" were one year worth of growth.

Maybe look into a school of filament barbs? They stay near the top most of the time, and are very active swimmers.

I hope that helps.

Have you ever considered a Pantodon buchholzi, the African Butterfly Fish. They remind me of small Arowanas and love the same water as most SAs. Soft acidic low ph.

I do like fish with a bit of personality and I have read the pink tail is very shy. Are there ways of minimizing this or do they all tend to be this way? I am rehoming some keyhole cichlids because they hide every time I come over and I have to wait 5-10 minutes before they will re-emerge, so I don't want more of the same behavior.

Any care to comment on the shyness of this fish and how common it is in their species?

They do look like little arowanas. :)

Unfortunately I am limited by what I can put in the tank. It has to be pretty..... The price I pay for living with my girlfriend. LOL

I was thinking about archerfish. I just recently read that there are pure freshwater species. Is this true? I would have the same concerns about jumping as I do for the chalceus. Could I house 3-4 in my 125 with my sevs and geo red heads?

I am honestly leaning away from the chalceus at this point purely for the skittish behavior that is common among them. And the only place I have found that can get one in wants $60. A bit outside my price range of $30-40.

I want something that will be relatively responsive to my presence and eager to see me. I like wet pets.
