Top soil in tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i don't want about $80 worth of fish to die from getting the wrong stuff from the store
and how messy is it do i clean the gravel and dry it the repeat or just take out the big stuff and dump it into my tank. and is it best to start the tank out dry then add the layer of top soil then put plants in then gently add water then wait a few hours then add my angles and tetras

You should do it when the tank is empty. The other link I gave you gives specific directions on how to place plants, and the gravel around them. Read through it again (the one on "How to set up a Planted Tank") and it gives a detailed step by step guide to how to do it.

I didn't wait any time from filling the tank with water and putting fish in. I rinsed the gravel very well, until the water ran clear from it. I didn't let it dry, you are just gonna fill the tank with water anyway. I used a small plate (saucer) to splash the water on to prevent the stream of water from disturbing the substrate.

Most the time you can add fish back in within 24 hours.
I would try a test bottle first. See how soon it is ready before I did a large tank.
It is possible but remember this kind of set up you need to go with tons of plants and planting one that cheep with enough plants wont be cheep.

idk it almost sounds easier to just use plant tabs and that liquid flourish stuff

Not really. In the long run this is easier once set up I have only done a few water changes. And only cause it has been drilled into my head you must do water changes.
With this type set up you can just top off and do water changes every 4 to 6 months. Most I go is 3 months. Even though test still show it is all fine I just got to do those water changes. It's a habit I feel strange not doing. lol

If you have a aquarium club in your area, you may be able to get LOTS of plants for super cheap. I just planted this ten gallon with all these plants and some cherry shrimp, all for 5 dollars from someone in the aquarium club. What isn't pictured is a large gob of flame moss and 3 peacock gudgeons which were included in the 5 dollars I paid. Pretty sweet deal, esp considering prices for them from LFS or even walmart/petsmart.
