Other than Arowanas, are there any other top water oddball fish out there? I had an arowana and it jumped out(same senario as everyone it seems, there was one hole in the lid and the aro found it).

I want something big, but probably less than 24" long.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Steve

Oh, I need freshwater only. I should have mentioned that.

Tankmates are 7 polys, a giant gourami and a very placid(I would not want to call him a wuss, but...) Jack Dempsey.

Although true giant gouramis will swim in all levels of the aquarium, the ones i see usually stay at the top, although that may be due to them being labyrinth fish, and they get pretty big, although they can get a little bigger than what your asking, however when I looked up the max size, the giant red tail gourami came up as well, and it stays a little smaller. Just an idea.

EDIT: Scratch all this, I read your post only after posting mine, sorry, lol back to the drawing board for me.

Oh, I already have the giant gourami and it actually is a red tailed giant gourami. I really like this fish. He is about 14" right not and fat too. And he tends to swim at all levels. I would just like one fish that stays mostly at the top. Something big but less than 24" since my tank is only 24" wide.

Gars not necessarily stay at the top level, but they do utilise all, so they might be a good choice.

i suggest gars. they utilize all levels of the tank but are considered top level dwellers. plus they're awesome oddballs. the common spotteds/floridas match the size you're looking for perfectly as well

Yeah, I was just writting in the "general" forum that I'd like true gars. I like them all but considering my tank is just a 180g and only 24" front-to-back, I would only be able to keep spotted/Florida gars which is fine by me.

I would need to find some bigger gars for sale though. I have some polys that are close to 10" and growing fast.

Thanks guys!

But if you have other suggestions, by all means, let me know!
