What sort of water do I use when topping off? LIke as in what type of water is safe? Water straight out of the tap? Water from tap that's been sitting for 24 hrs or more? RO water?

I just started my tank and its that time again to top it off, so I wanted to see what will be safe for my fish.

Dont use tap water, that will cause lots of problems. RO water is the best, just remember water evaporates the salt doesnt. When you top it off, check your salinity before you add more salt water. Alot of times you only need fresh.

Just use RODI water to top off your aquarium. I have my rodi water run through a Kalk reactor and then into the sump. It just adds some kalk to the top off water. It helps with PH and ALK. My system is all automated. I have a float switch that turns on a pump and pumps rodi water through the Kalk reactor and then into the sump. I also have the top off pump hooked into a PH controller it will turn off the pump if my PH goes above 8.5. That helps because of the KAL.

I've checked my salinty and such.

Hmm....how can I acheive RO water at home? Are there other alternate ways to get rid of all the minerals and impurities in the water?

Easiest and best way to ensure the best water for your tank and fish is to just invest in a RO/DI Unit. I wouldn't go without one, your looking at about $150-$200 depending on what size you go even high depending. But its worth it forsure.

you could get a steam distiller instead, but they get really hot make water really slow. never consider this :D iz just kidding
yeah home RO unit is the best bet i would hook it up to the main water source so that ALL you water is RO. just better that way i think.

This is the best place and quality for the money! I have a RODI unit. It is really nice having a RODI unit. When I change units I am going to order from them. Again this another initial cost of the hobby. It is expensive to set up a salt tank RIGHT the first time. But when u finally get it set up. Life is good and your corals, Fish, etc are going to be really happy!

Good Luck!

Thanks guys for all your help! I'll be looking into getting one, or maybe getting supplied some RO water from my local aquarium just down the road. Need to save up........!
