Tor Mosal Yawn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Had to look it up http://www.fishbase.se/Nomenclature...Code=27326&GenusName=Tor&SpeciesName=putitora

So mosal is a junior synonym of putitora.

How long have you had it, what size did you get it, and what's the growth like on this guy?

While I do notice some Putitora-esque characteristics, it definitely stands as its own fish in my eyes. Their head and mouth shape are similar, but that's where it ends. IME Mosal is a lot more stocky than Putitora, as well as a two tone red/silver coloration. I've got some Putitora growing out that will be joining these guys soon.

I've had him a little less than a year and he was already big when I got him. He was probaby 14" when he arrived and tips the scale at just a hair over 16" at this point.

Thanks for the info. Did the fish come from Wes or Ray and is the ID theirs?

Hmm, interesting. Could it simply be that yours is neither mosal nor putitora, if we believe FishBase that these two are one and the same, but another species?

Or is this not what FishBase says?

Jibran and you make it sound that the Tor genus is a bit of a mess. I am looking to learn.

Wes just sent me three putitora last week but they are young, 4"-5".

Yup the tor classification, needs a review, most of the Indian fish genus are being reviewed.
Last year the whole genus of puntius was reviewed and new were added, such as dawkinsia, haludaria, and some are still maintained under puntius. Similar scenario is of the channa gachua complex or the Stewarti complex.

Ichthyologists are having separate train of thoughts on the identification of the species of tors, I have tried understanding how in biology that can happen, and have given up.

The three tors, ie; putitora mosal and tor are from the same distribution, and these fish as an individual specie have many varying characteristics, such as the shape of the mouth, the thick lipped or not, the color range being bright orange to pale yellow. Some believe the locality is what describes the fish, while some say that these fish migrate a lot and unless a DNA analysis is done confirmation of species is difficult.

Thanks, Jibran. Much appreciate your current conclusions.

I didn't know putitora may differ from mosal, and that putitora, mosal, and tor have not been sorted out yet.

Beautiful
How big are these guys
