I just set up a 50 gallon FOWLR tank. I may add some weed-like corals at some point (think gsp and xenia) but then again I might not. What's killing me is choosing fish for it. I am pretty certain I want a snowflake moray eel and a dwarf zebra lionfish. I would like to add a third fish, and am torn between...

1. Red Diana Hogfish (10" max)
2. Blue spotted puffer (4" max-- but it will probably not work with a lion, right?)
3. Marine bette (7-8" max)

Thoughts??

not sure about the puffer but it would be awesome,
otherwise i would say the betta, they are nice (there is one at my lfs right now  )

Anyone else have some thoughts? This tank will be upped to at least a 75 by next year (unless I can talk the SO into a 125 and find the cash to do it) ;)

good luck filtering that tank...

the comet would mesh best with the other persoanlities in the tank but the puffer could do fine if added at full size and at the same time as the lion (also preferably full sized)

Comet?

oh.. sorry

marine bettas are sometimes called comets

Stay away from any puffer if you plan on a lion fish.
There are plenty of other things you can have that are nice, but you really need to do your research on tank mates.
For example, the marine betta when it grows should be able to swallow a lot of things even slightly smaller than it. So it would not make a good tankmate to many types of anything.
Pick what you like. Put it down on paper. Do research. Try for yourself.
Only really one way of finding out what will work for you or not.

Also your title reminds me of this....

what kind of filtration to you plan to have. i would say a skimmer in this setup is a must and the tank will need to prove itself stable before you add the full stock of fish and corals, as any ammonia build up, could increase quickly with your list.

Corals as well, may not even be a good addition to this tank just due to the possibility of your fish eating them.

I would also suggest some RO water for sure, this will help keep toxins to a minimum and help keep algae down as well.

good luck, keep us posted with some updates.

Filtration will be live-rock based. I currently have 20 lbs of live rock, and am going to add another 30 as I get the money and time. I have a Coralife Super Skimmer 65 to use on it but it's not yet running. I also have an Emperor 280. I don't think I am going to leave that on there permanently, I just put it on while I was mixing the salt. I'm planning on doing 5-10 gallon water changes per week.
