your going to need 1.5-2 lbs of live rock per gallon and way way more filtration. i would also get a bigger skimmer...

I was planning on this being a growout tank for these species. They will be moved into a 75 (or, if I can get it, a 125) within a year.

I will be adding more live rock. Nothing will be added to the tank (except some snails and hermits to eat the now-growing algae) until all the live rock is solidly in place.

Snails and Hermits will vanish without a trace. Especially when there is a puffer around.

Yes, a puffer is a bad idea. Especially with xenia. I tried xenia with my puffer and it didnt end well. Pretty much any coral that moves is fair game for my puffer. That and snails and hermits.
Although I did have him in with a dwarf lion and they got along great. Every once and a while I'd find black spots on my puffer from the lion. Stupid puffer liked to snuggle up next to him and spoon.
Confused the hell outa the lion for a while. But he eventually got used to it.

Okay, so scratch the puffer. Would there be room to grow out a third fish in the tank-- either a red diana or a marine betta-- or should I reconsider my stock list.

This is my progress so far. I've got 5 lbs of live rock over 15 lbs of base rock (regular marine reef stuff). I built a nice little cave for the lion and an eel tube system for the eel. I am going to use some income tax money to finish off the liverock-- building it in a C towards the empty end, with open space in the center.

why not try a hamlet, one of the larger dottybacks, or like a medium sized boxfish(if you can get one)

If it's going to be upped to a 75 or 125 the hogfish sounds good, just an opinion hit have you looked at axelspot or Cuban hogs? I think they hold their colors better

I actually have only ever seen pics of hogs-- never seen one in person. I will look into Cuban's. The RD's are beautiful as juvies-- if they do not hold their color as adults, that would suck. Also never seen hamlets around here, but I imagine my LFS could order one for me. Thanks for the suggestions and comments!

Wouldn't the lion eat dottybacks?

Hiya
I wouldn't bother with the Betta. We have one in with a Snowflake Moray, but the Betta is so incredibly shy, we've seen him once - briefly. Bettas are truly beautiful fish, very tough and hardy, but unless you get one that is the opposite of the norm, I'd get a more outgoing fish :-)
