Now i learned that baby aquatic turtles need UVB light in order for their shell to grow proporly and adult turtles don't "REQUIRE" UVB.

but do baby and adult tortoises such as the russian need UVB lighting? or can I take him out in the sun for 15minutes everyday with my mud turtle?

All turtles and tortoises should have access to some sort of UVB rays. It's just that some species, mainly ones that don't bask, really don't require UVB rays to survive compared to a basking species. What's the big deal with using a UVB bulb anyways, they're not that much more then a regular bulb. It's just good practice to use them.

I do recommend UVB for well-being - babies and adults both.

i personally run UV on my torts when they are inside (during heavy rainy season) and leave it running on a timer for 12hrs a day and obviously when outside they get sun as long as it is up... just remeber that their is a possiblity that they dont get enough sunlight but they cant OD on sun light :)
they also need hides/shade to get too if the sun becomes to intense for their likeing... just do the best you can...
if the tort is still hatchling (2-3inches) i would go for an hour a day if possible if your not going to use a light indoors and supplemnet food with calcium/D3 powder every so many days...

I'll go with the sunlight then!
since i'm probably get the size they have at pet stores that around 4 or 5".

hey vicious_fish..i forgot..did you say my sonora mud turtle is NOT a basking turtle?
what about the reeves turtle, softshell, and fly river turtle? they are all species i want to keep in the future.

Mud turtles in general are not basking species, but you should still provide them with a place to bask and a UVB light.

i got a turtle dock and a submurged rock but no UVB lights yet..and i'm not sure if wether it's worth the money or not too.

hey, and when cola gets on the submerged rock, the water level is equal to where the top of his shell is. and i see him stretching his neck to breathe, but does he do this all night long? wouldn't it make him tired? i mean come one, before i got the sbmerged rock he always slept on the turtle dock..

Ok, this crap is raised once again. UV LIGHT IS UNNNECESSARY FOR REPTILES! IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY AND YET ANOTHER WAY PET STORES SUCK MONEY OUT OF YOU. Consider Frank Retes, the 'goanna man'. Monitors are a reptile considered by newbies to need UV. Frank Retes has raises HUNDREDS of generations of 90% of monitor species for 40 YEARS on simply crickets, mice, and NO UV. Varied diet? Bull. UV light? Bull. If you like, talk to the man Frank himself on varanus.net. If youve wanted to meet the guy who literally is solely responsible for CB monitors, check it out.

Stop reading caresheets. Talk to someone with true SUCESS and EXPERIENCE, not a loser on kingsnake or repticzone who kept a turtle alive for 2 straight weeks. Same applies for 'Petco Joe'.

Stop wasting your money. Get a high basking spot, low 60 degree cool end, and everything in between.

Plants? Thats a different story, of which I have no clue.

Now the water level is 1/2" above the top of his shell when he is on the submerged rock at night..
and i guess he has to stretch his neck out the whole night, or breath/goback/breath/goback all night long..but will this tire my turtle out?

and also, are turtles weak against sudden temperature change?
such as when he is in the aquarium water and when i take him outside to his tub that is filled with cold water and then have him out in the sun for 20minutes and have him warmed up, then going back to the aquarium water again.. Will this make something in his body go bad?

and vicious..can i feed all saltwater fish to freshwater turtles..or only tuna?
