hey I am thinking of getting a russian tortoise
I will be building a complex of cages for a wall in my bedroom and I know the best option for a tortoise is a tortoise table but could one thrive in a sliding front type enclosure?
thanks

How big will the foot print be, do you have the necessary lights?

somewhere between 4x2x2-6x2x2 and yes I dont see why they wouldnt get the right lights

Dude russian tortoises are like most mainly outdoor tortoises, indoor for growth, bad weather or quarentine its ok but they really need to be outside in the bigest enclosure you can arrange for it, in order to really trive and be happy. Also you will be able to see very interesting behaviors that you will miss indoors. The 6x2x2 its ok for one male or perhaps 2 females but much more space its needed for normal behavior like roaming

yea I figured that but up here there are only two months tops that they could be ok outdoors even then nights can get pretty cold
what about box turtles

Take them inside during nigth to be shure. Also what do you think they get in the steppes of Russia? Miami heat?:grinno: As long as they are dry and healty cold is not a issue, but making shure they are not outdoors during rain makes part of the chalanges of owning these guys. Box turtles are worse indoors and trive outdoors

what about a "dog house" like thing that has a heat pad in it

You can use it on weak rain provided that its 100% moist proof but I wouldnt trust even that on heavy rain periods. Also the fact that they arent compatible with moist doesant mean that the next day with the ground all wet they wouldnt try to get around just to get hill later. Why dont you get something like a herman tortoise or a ibera greek wich also have the adicional advantage of being 100% cb? Thouse arent good on heavy rain either but at least they are more adaptable to moist then russians. All require planificacion of the outdoor enclosure so that all water can drain easily. Or you could get eastern box turtles and in the long term house them outside year round like Vicious does. Any ways remenbar to buy only cb!

nearly all tortoises in canada a CB and they all cost three limbs and a kidney
what I ment with the heated box was in case it was chilly during the day
where I live we have very strong winds almost every day which will suck the warmth right out of you I do not plan on getting him anytime soon
I have just always been interested in torts
