Tortoise in backyard with swimming pool

Been kicking around the idea of getting a tortoise for the back yard, thinking of a spur thighed. Any how, if you have an inground pool with the water level about 6-10" from the edge, would the tortoise be smart enough to not fall into it?
 
probably not.... if it can get out there... via a ramp.. it most likely will....
friend of my has a huge sulcata that walked right into the pond one day.... we watched him and just as we were beginning to think we might have to tow him out he came walking up right on the side...he just walked right across....
 
No, you need to cover your pool, torts are not that smart.

I totally agree. If it were a Box or Wood Turtle then you'd be fine but most tortoises aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.
 
We actually have a ponywall built to keep our tortoises and turtles from a fatal swim. But ours are smaller, leopards, boxes, etc. A sulcata will get big and it will be easy for it to dig under most anything. You have been warned.
