UVB is super important, the best lights are mega-ray from www.reptileuv.com

another thing is that when people say herps need UV rays......

well there two kinds..........

UVA and UVB

UVA keeps reptiles mentally and pycologically healthy

UVB help with the absorption of calcium into the body

i think i left afew things out, oh well ill read up on it

been two years since i last kept a herp

why are vitamins so important?
I agree that torts with a history of neglect or uneducated owners may need supplementation for a time, but with UVB at 50 microwatts/sq cm and a diet of moderately varied greens has kept my torts healthy for 7 years,
I know they are healthy because I work at an exotic vet clinic. I regularly test for parasites and have done 2 x-rays on each. Adittionally they both had ultrasounds during a vet training session. They also both have had full blood panels.
I know supplements have their place, but if you've ever seen hypervitaminosis A you'd be a little more carefull with the dust.
Sorry to rant, but I am ultra-cautious w/ my torts and diagnostics cost me very little.
I hope this info makes experienced herp owners feel better about trying to mimic natural conditions.
