my LFS had a 1500g acrylic shark tank spring a leak, after 8 years of being set up. they were able to drain and repair it though.

Yes, there's always a chance that either could fail but which fails a lot more? That acrylic tanks' reliability has achieved near-mythic status speaks to their reliability.
