I have always seen people recommending bad quality food (based on ingredient and composition), so I decided a post from reddit

It's a copy of post from Kmuda and still has some minor controversial material/errors/out dated data like use of Ethoxyquin in northfin but still holds a good value to me.

On this I got the following comment (irony)

There is so much absolutely great food on the market that’s been specifically designed for Flowerhorns and other Hybridized Cichlids and is so much better for them than regular cichlid foods. Foods like Northfin is great for fish probably one of the top two or three brands out there but it’s nothing compared to foods specifically designed for these Flowerhorn. Food like Excalibur’s Diamond Dust and Intense Red, Scarlett’s Dark Rise and Endless Red, Possave, Mick Kamfa, Humpy Head, Bodega, Okiko Platinum and Crystal Red are absolutely great and so much better than standard cichlid foods. Using multiple foods as supplements like Northfins Krill Gold or Bloodworms or Shrimp can have huge benefits in the growth of the fish.

On which I commented

I personally think think there is no flowerhorn specific food (only ones marketed as such), because flowerhorns don't have any majorly different nutrional need than any other CA/SA cichlid, people are better off buying northfin or NLS which is a lot cheaper when bought in bulk. Both contain enough amount of Astaxanthin. Many of the foods you listed do have fillers except Excalibur. Point of my post was about not looking for a brand but rather understand ingredients and choose.

After this all hell broke loose, I was called cheap, unethical, dishonest by people who sell/make this food. The 2 people who were angry created few posts saying "You never once mention the roll genes play in the fishes quality. You insist that Omega wil make your fish a champion and it’s cheap." which was totally ridiculous.

Another thread about carophyll red was very interesting as well

My reply was

It's a synthetic version of Astaxanthin, it has a petroleum residue that might be an issue, no long term research on it exists.

to which the owner of fish food company replied

It was created in a lab but it is organic with no known side effects as stated in a few studies about poultry when it is used regularly. No know petroleum reside https://efsa.onlinelibrary.wiley.co...8ahaLKWp3C8ij_1HS1DI39fQr-KppyyfM2MJTALJUtsCY It has also been used in salmon for decades.

My reply
not sure how much the research on Poultry would be relevant and long term effects are not accounted for in salmons as well that are raised in aquaculture. Carophyll Pink and Carophyll Red are synthetic color enhancing agents derived from petroleum by-products.How can be something created in lab be organic?

His reply
omfg, seriously!!! You bring out crap all the time on studies on topics that are not the subject of the matter!!!!!! I bring one out and you say it’s unrelated!!!

My reply
sorry, did I say unrelated? Even when you posted a research on Poultry just to say something against what I said "no long term research on it exists."? I said "not sure how much the research on Poultry would be relevant". Also do mention me in the comment so that I get a notification to reply to you.

His reply
I can assure you, the lack of tagging you was not an intentional mistake. I would have never deprived you of the shock I felt at having you dismiss everyone else’s experiences, knowledge, studies, as secondary to your own. Because it seems that you are always right, even in face of the very evidence you present..... ??? Good night, hope you sleep soundly knowing you are the almighty of all knowledge that the world contains!!!!

Sounds like ya had a fun day atleast lol. Seems like some people are just so set in their own ways that they refuse to see the "other side" of the coin. I just don't understand why everyone have to explode over hearing new information of any caliber.

Well when somebody asks you how your day went you can at least say something basides boring. lol

Another reason to not go onto facebook.

I do feel bad for people getting scammed in to buying these foods, every new comer get's advice to buy this and that food. Once one guy was waiting for his paycheck to come to buy thai active minerals for his fish, it seems like it died recently from one of his post.

I do found some sensible comments from few good people. One was a breeder who totally discarded flowerhorn specific foods. One of the famous seller said that northfin would be much healthier (he also said that few food bring certain traits out but are not good).

Admin said me saying "people are better off buying northfin or NLS which is a lot cheaper when bought in bulk." showed my character and integrity. lol

He started selling food in Canada and I am fighting with manufacture, lol. Tougher day for him.

Reactions: Cichlids keeper
Flowerhorns are basically vieja-trimac cross with some other central americans thrown in.And I have seen amazingly colored vieja just fed with run off the mill cichlid pellets. So same will work for flowerhorns too.I am really fed up with these magical flowerhorn food stuff going on man,it is just repulsive.Unhealthy too, main reason why our fish become swimming butterballs with livers twice the size they should be.Used to feed them but won't ever again

Same goes on with asian arowanas too. With their magic foods and constant inbreeding within a small gene pool those breeders out there are breeding aros that live 5-6 years if lucky. Not a arowana expert but even I know those fish can easily see 15's and more if sourced from a good breeder and fed proper food.
