Local bred mbuna can live in toilet water. Years ago I had a friend that would do 50% water changes in a 120 gal maybe every 6 months with cold untreated tap water, never a problem. He also changed the filter about as often.

In my personal experiences, my black spotted raphael. I forgot I had him, and he was in a crevice of a ornament. he survived out of the tank and stuck in this ornament overnight. i didn't realize he was in there till the next day. i poked him and he started croaking at me, so i quickly got him back in the water. Also, when moving I drained my tank, and he was buried in the gravel. He and a peacock eel lived in what little water was in the gravel for 3 days.

I also had a small ID Shark that survived being eaten.

I would have to nominate my new iridescent shark.. I rescued him from a person who had it in a 29gal... It is 14 inches long, so it was tough enough staying in that tank... and when i got it had what i believe was fin rot and his skin was shredded.. i quarantined him and he is now very healthy and handling small quarrels with my oscar with ease.. tough guy

those ID Sharks are definately tough. one I had several years ago survived getting stabbed by a freaky now ex girlfriend who was jelous that my fish were getting so much attention.
