tragic news I must share

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
on the positive side, i never knew we are captive breeding so many fish.

hope it warms up

One of the effects of global warming is the change of direction in the prevailing winds, this doen't just apply to warmer weather. This event was very tragic for the industry and in this ecomony it might be crippling to some. It will be interesting to see what changes are in store for the future of fish farming as I'm sure they will try to prevent a re-occurance. On the short term, a raise in market prices is probably enevitable. My sympathies go out to all thoose effected.

The optimist in me wonders.....

Presuming this drives the cost of hobby level fish way up (how can it not?!?) perhaps fewer idiots will impulse buy fish they have no idea how to care for, and more research will go into purchases.

I was going to say something similar... but its definitely true that if you fight with mother nature, she'll come back swinging...

Either way... sad to hear about the losses out there...

This is terrible. I am sure there are hobbiests who can help supply with future breeding stock. I know since you mentioned salvini there are many on here who keep gourgous pairs on here. I am sure for once some of the hobbiests who keep F0-F2 can lend a hand.
I was thinking about this last night. I have a few pairs myself that I would be willing to donate fry from to send back to a very select few down there.I would love to say they are all in this for the love of fish but of course thats not true and some are in it just for the dollar. I do know the collectors who do it for the love of it would definitely get some pairs back from me or in the least, the F1 fry.

That is really a drag. It is such hard work and a lot of stress to be any kind of farmer. I hope that this has just been a freak weather event and that those folks can start to recover.
They are all working together down there from what I am hearing also. So each different farm is collecting what they can to move indoors and will of course trade off on rebuilding their supplies. For instance,if I was there and lost a male but you have one ~ we now have a pair to start over with.etc
Also just wait to see how much your orange juice and anything citrus goes up in price. I went and bought 6 gallons of OJ the other night and froze a few so I have it.

TRUE TRUE AND TRUE

very few are wild fish. Why do you think so many of us go to such lengths in ordering from so far away and running to airports and all the other stuff we gotta deal with to recieve or ship wild fish? Probably 98% of the fish out there are overbred and prone to issues because of that. Not to mention, they have no colors compared to wild or F1 fish.

Lousy. We probably won't see the full effects of this until weeks down the road as LFS runout of their stock and look to re-order. Could be major shortages in the hobby!

You can imagine that the prices for the livestock is going up :( at the local fish stores.

That will be bad!

But how about the fact it will take a while to get new stock in and breeding, and then to get stock levels back up. So what does that mean for the LFS? Probably to look to elsewhere for stock, like far east replenishment. Now more of US monies going overseas.

This will impact our hobby for quite awhile!

Bummer that really sucks. Im sure that between everyone on MFK there is plenty of fish to breed and bring the numbers back up if it where to get worse. Pitty tho

:(
