I acquired a 2-2.5" jardini earlier this week. seems a bit skitish, but otherwise looks to be adapting nicely to his new home.

My question is for those people who have trained their arrowana to take pellets or "food sticks" how long did you have to starve your fish before they started to accept it?

I tried a food stick or two, along with a small freeze dried krill today. However, my jardini would eat it with enthusiam - but would always just spit it back out.

Just curious. I read on some other website that they recommended feeding live foods first - then when the arrowana is larger, it can be trained to eat other stuff. I always thought it was the other way around - the whole break bad habits early thing. haha. Any thoughts or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm getting a Blk Aro Fri and intend to get it switched over to eating Hikari food sticks, thawed raw shrimp and fish, and live crickets ASAP. Advice is very needed and welcomed!!!!!!!!!!

It's my opinion that market prawn (MP) is the best staple food for aros. I give it to them every day, and then once a week give them a treat live crickets or mealworms. I have tried fresh fish cubes, but they didn't take it. Be careful with crickets as they are very "addictive" ... your aro might not wanna eat other foods after tasting them.

I insert aro sticks into the MP to ensure my aros get all the vits they need, and MP also has a high protein content, which aros need.

Taboojen ... you just need to starve them longer and they will eventually take the pellets. It's often a question of who's will is stronger (and they can last for over a month without eating!).

I'm also a newbie to aro keeping so please feel free to correct any mistakes I have made ... hope it helps!

It might take times to train aro to take pellet...
why not just feed with Market Prawn (MP), SuperWorm(SW) or some other food...
the growth rate will be different if you compare aro which is taking pellet and aro which is taking meat....

Hardly you can see aro which consume pellet can grow to the size of around 12" in the first year.
But you can easily find aro that consume meat can grow to 12" or some even 15" in the first year....

of coarse though their where other meat goodies on the menu as well  , but pellets was her staple

Yeah.. I don't plan on just giving my arrowana soley food sticks. hehe. It just seemed the least appealing to most arrowanas, so I wanted to get him use to it first before mixing in other stuff too. (Kinda get some random nutrients into him ya know.) Don't wanna spoil him too early.

DeLgAdo - I'm so very jealous of ya right now. haha. but its ok.. hehe i'll live vicariously through you. haha

yeah.. i just have to break his will before he breaks mine. haha Watch, Imma gonna be running to the LFS in like two days for some small minnows/guppies to appease him. haha.

What's your take on beef hearts? I know people use to feed that a lot before, but I dont hear much about it nowadays. I also have some frozen mysis shrimp I use to feed my saltwater fishes. Anyone feed them those?

Thanks again!

wow. that just seems like such a long time. Heck.. five hours w/o food and i'm starving already.

oh a brighter note - just threw a food stick in there to see what would happen tonight. The little jardini gobbled it down - and this time - it didnt come back out! woohoo!. haha. Hope its not a one time thing. :p
