If you are wanting to put it to sleep permanently to end it's suffering use Clove oil and vodka.

If it's just temporary you can use the clove oil and rinse him off good in freshwater and he should come around.

I have heard of people using clove oil to tranquillize and transport fish.
Mind you this is about piranhas...not sure if all the same stuff applies

It's just like any anesthetic, to much will kill the fish, to little will not last long enough, you need just the right amount for the desired effects. The Vodka will kill the fish while it's in the tranquilized state putting it out peacefully.

With my experience with clove oil all you got to do is rinse them and get fresh water running through their gills and their good to go.

the vodka isn't supposed to have an effect...its to emulsify the oil so it doesn't just sit on the surface of the water...

Yeah, that's right.

I've used clove oil to sedate my goldfish and remove its tumor with no issues. My solution was a liter of fresh clean water with a 7.5 mL of clove oil. It took my goldfish over a minute before it fell unconscious. After surgery, grab a tub of fresh clean water and place the fish there. Keep the water well aerated with an airpump. Your arowana will need more than what my goldfish went through and clove oil in small amounts will not kill your arowana. How big is your arowana?

He's about 1.5 inches. I'm kinda skeptical about the clove oil.
