Just a general question to those who have sold a car, etc.

when i sell the car to a private party and give them the title, do i keep the top portion and mail this in to the DMV so i am not responsible for any damages or whatever the buyer does with the car? the top portion is not actually the title but it has square boxes that can fill out info with buyer/seller details.

never sold something to another private party so never filled one out before. just wanted to make sure all is properly done cause i dont want them to come back to me in the future.

Thanks in advance for any help.

GO with the buyer to the DMV and make sure all is done legit........And all paerwork is out of your name...............Oh and it depends what state you are in if you keep you tag or send it back to the state!!!

The precise procedure may vary depending on your jurisdiction. In CA, there is a Release of Liability form that is attached to the Title. The seller signs the Release of Liability form and mails or delivers it to the DMV. The seller also signs over the Title to the buyer, along with a certification regarding the odometer reading.

I actually kinda figured by your description of the title paperwork (blocks) that you were in so cal........I used to live there...............As dane cook put it "THE DMV IS THE ARMPIT OF HELL"!!!

I've bought and sold a few cars / bikes when i lived there, you should be fine by just signing the release / title over but make sure you mail off your portion asap or bring it in in person to the dmv to get the car out of your name...........any tickets etc after you transfer and dont do that will be your responsibility!!! But as i originally said go with the buyer to aleviate any problems ( i got screw3d once, i know)........As you know it sucks waiting there at the DMV for 4 hrs and taking the day off of work to find out you need some stoopid paper that only the buyer /seller can provide and is not present!!!....;)
