Hello, so soon i will be going away for the weekend. There is a really nice LFS on the way to where i am going but it is closed on Sunday when i would be coming home. So if this is possible, i would be picking the fish up on friday, 2 hour drive to where i am going, they would be staying the weekend, and then have to travel 5 hours back home. I would be bringing a 5 gallon tank and setting it up temporarily with an aqua tech 5-15, 100 watt heater, crushed coral and filter media from another tank (any sugestions on how to get the filter media there without the bacteria dying.)? What i would be getting would be about 5 1.5 to 2 inch African cichlids. (maybe more clown loaches if they have them) They would travel in bags that would be in an insulated container and then be released into the 5 gal tank when they get to where i am going. Then rebagged when i leave to go home, tank will not be setup in the car! Planning on just using the water that came in the bags to fill tank then how ever much more i need. Will this work? Any comments?

A OK...I bought fish from Anaheim, got stuck in LA traffic and whole trip home from the minute I picked up the fishes were 6 hours and they were stressed and colorless when I got home. Let them acclimate slowly and all colors came back and healthy.

I didn't even have a tank or heater, just the bags they came in and cardboard box

I don't know, this sounds like a disaster in the making. You're going to buy the fish on Fri, set up a makshift aquarium and take them home on Sun? I guess it could work, it depends on if the BB survive the transfer but I'm not sold on using a 5 gallon tank. I'm imagining a large ammonia spike.

On a side note: With the crushed coral it sounds like you're going to be keeping the africans in 8+ ph. Please don't combine Clown Loaches with africans at that PH.

I guess it depends on how long it will take them to get over the initial two hour trip. Your plan sounds good, but I would be more concerned about the 5 gallon tank for 5 2" fish when already stressed out. Why not use a big tote? You could use a 30 gallon tote, 2/3 filled and quadruple their space.

Africans are hardy fish. I think your plan will work, but consider more space for them.

++1 Definitely, and I buy the socket plug for the cigarette lighter power and use for heater

Wait. Weren't you the kid that couldnt find a home for your pleco because you only had a 20 gallon. What are you going to do with these african cichlids?
