Transporting ATF

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I picked mine up in a 5 gallon bucket and drove him home approx 2 hours. Put a little bit of aquarium salt in there and covered the top with a towel. I didn't have any issues at all, luckily mine just kind of hovered in the middle of the bucket and didn't spazz out at all.

Obviously others have had much worse experiences doing it this way, so just putting it out there that it may be up to the individual fish that you pick up that determines how it reacts to travel.

Well I have a styrofoam box and I have a big enough bag. But I have no O2 and I don't know where I would get any bag buddies by Wednesday morning

Just bring a couple bottles of purified water and every half hour pour half the bottle in. That will oxygenate and add fresh h20. Never transported one but I do this when ever I pick up fish unless its lfs

I'd pack it just like shipping it. I've only attempted to move 1 ATF once, and I definitely did it WRONG, now the fish will never be the same.

I picked up a Gatf and had a 2 hour car ride, and I'm pretty sure the damage suffered during transport is permanent. Just destroyed itself smashing into the sides, top, and bottom on the way home.

Bag it up, O2, bag buddies, and a styro box. Just like you were dropping it off at the airport to ship. I'd think that would minimize the damage they can inflict on themselves compared to say a tote with a bubbler or water pump that will likely just make it even flightyier.

+1
I would ask LFS for some O2!

I'd agree that the bag technique with O2 would be best, because a bag sealed tight with air is soft, so when he bangs into it he wont damage his nose ... I'd keep a bucket of some sort just in case his teeth pop the bag, and I'm sure you can rig a bubbler into the bag and still be ok without pure O2 .... I also agree that catching him quickly and efficiently is important, I'd suggest taking out decorations, draining half the tank, then use 2 big nets to grab him ... good luck, minor injuries will heal, expect him to lose some scales, you just dont want him banging up his nose or eyes

This does not sound like it will end well...

If you want to kill it, use bag buddies, clove oil or add purified water every half hour.

If you don't believe me, go ahead and try it out and see what happens...you're not going to be happy.

ATF as small as this one are super sensitive to water changes.

Your best bet is a sealed bag with pure oxygen.

If you can't get that, then let someone else buy it.

i picked up a 12" VATF 5 hours away. started off in big bag with lots of oxygen, but he managed to tear through double bags half way home so it was placed into a styrofoam box with air pump.

made it home a little stress but alive. he's now swimming and eating like a beast. :nilly:

The only thing he's still healing from is his banged up face from being so skittish the whole ride home. GL with transporting.

i highly recommend big bag and oxygen. My ATF was not stressed in the bag and more stressed in the box alone.

If an LFS won't do it try calling the local veterinarians. After all, they deal with animals. Its not likr calling a Dr.

O2 is O2, provided it's pure.....

Not many people out there that don't know someone that fixes cars, and likely has a torch......

Not sure about other LFSs out there, but the ones around just use an air pump..... No pure O2.
