Saving water is useless. Bacteria that supports the bio load of the tank lives in the filter media and other surfaces in the aquarium/setup.

agreed. that's why u can get away with a 50% WC and not wreck ur tank...cause most the BB lives in filters, substrate, and decorations....

Only thing to becareful with there is to make sure the tank don't slide off woops lol

lol! that would be epic FAIL.

but regardless, i hope u don't plan on having jus u and ur g/f lift a 55g tank w/ 2" of substrate submerged in water....unless u and ur chick both juice heads. lol.

now that i've read the whole thread, if u wanna take as much water as possible, i hope u got a ton of paint buckets, or if u do the 50g garbage can trick, u better have that can on a dolly and can roll the dolly out to a u-haul cause i'd love to see a video of u and some buddies trying to life ~400 lbs of water into the bed of a truck :D

i think u'd be fine taking a 4 or 5 paint buckets of tank water then jus using tap for the rest....depending on the size of your decorations and w/ ur 2" of substrate, u don't have 55g of water in ur tank anyhow.

thanks guys. Im getting ready do leave in about an hour tops to start moving everything. I have a bag of cichlid sand substrate can I put that in like half the tank and keep the other side rock? that wont do anything will it?

You are quite correct. Water contains virtually no bio-bacteria. It is found on physical surfaces; filter media, gravel, etc. The more porous, the greater the concentration. That's why keeping your filter media damp is important during moving. It is also important to make sure it stays oxygenated. If you shut off your canister filter for more than a few hours it can get become oxygen starved.

For the OP, nothing wrong with mixing gravel types. It's up to you if you like the look.

oh last thing what would u recomend to scoop the gravel out with??

ok thanks! Im still nervous about moving everything lol. I just hope my fish are ok and that my fry make it ok

the 5g buckets that im going to use to put the fish in, theyll be ok with the lid on for the trip and then once I get them in my room Ill take them off. will that be ok? oh sh** uhm will a undergravel filter be ok if I decide to put the sand in with it? of should I take the side out that I put the sand in, and leave the piece under the gravel in?

I'd use a net for the gravel.

I can't say if the fish will be okay without knowing how many there are and their sizes. If you put 50 6" fish in a 5 gal, it's gonna be a problem. Coolers are also really good for this sorta thing. You can also get cheap battery operated air-pumps if you're concerned.
