Traveling with live fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for longer trips i try and bag 'em... just like your lfs gets them in... 25% water to 75% air... keep the temps in the 60's or up and don't shake 'em like a pair of dice. I've had a fish shipped to me once.. he arrived just fine.. alot of people do different.. but I acclimate the bag to my tanks water and cut and release... ammonia ect builds up in the bag over time, but with depleated O2.. it puts it in a state of limbo... once you cut the bag your water perameters can skyrocket... I always fast fish a min of 3 days before moving as well to decrease waste.

The worst I've done is a 18 hour drive two states over. I put my fish in a big old cooler inside of one of those big black trash bags with a battery powered air pump (BPAP) for oxygenation.

I put the bag inside of the cooler first. Then, I put tank water in the bag in the cooler to fill it about 1/4-1/3rd of the way up. I'd then put the BPAP airstone in the bag and tie the knot over the hose of the BPAP. You have to tie it tight enough to control splashes from the water but not so tight as to cut off the air flow to the airstone. Then, I notched the lid of the cooler so it could close without pinching the air hose. I don't like leaving the BPAP in the cooler because some water normally splashes out of the bag.

This is the same method I'm planning to use in 9-10 months when I'm out of the army and I leave Missouri to go back to Georgia. I'll have several rather large fish though so I suspect this time I may end up using clove oil to sedate them.

Thanks for the info guys. Ill remember that for If I move again or just transporting a fish.

I just brought home some fire mouths from the Bronx. I got some 8 hr heat packs and wrapped it in a napkin. wrapped both heat pack and bag in a sweater then put em in a back pack. For something thing I thought of on the fly it worked well.
