using 2 2x4's screwed together keeps you from having to notch out the 4x4's for the corners.

Thats what Myself and most others do.

When using pressure treated you have to use the right fasteners as well. If you use regular screws the chemicals in the wood can eat the screw and cause premature failure. I would check the wood and fastener combo before building.
