treating freshwater rays for parasites

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a trio of laticeps rays. My female stopped eating for like 2 weeks. Im a wc nazi so I wasnt worried about water quality issues too much. She became so thin that her skin was wrinkiling in some places. She showed no signs of parasites at all. Her two tankmates were also eating less but eating a lil. I thought she was going to die for sure, all day at work i tried to figure out ways to save her. I tried some tablets called parasite guard. bought them at petsmart. treated the tank. When i went to feed them that night , to my surprise she ate. and she continued to eat as much as she could. Now shes a big ol fatty! just my experience, im not sure if it was the meds that worked or coincidence.

Personally I hate the answer "my water is perfect" with no numbers posted. What readings are you getting when you check parameters?
It's hard to suggest a broad range treatment when you don't know what you are targeting (when it comes to internal parasites).

Swim bladder infection

When did elasmos start havint swim/air bladders !? Must be amazing to have an infected organ that isn't there.

i have herd stories of fish floating around funny like this guys ray and it was swim bladder apparently.I was unaware of the fact they dont have one,i dont know very much more than what i see on the outside of the rays.I have never studied the insides of any fish, maybe shouldnt just throw something out their if i am just guessing or at least state i was guessing.

what would be causeing his ray to float odd like he is saying.bad water??

well why would its ass end float up in the air he was looking like a tire it was weird can anny one tell me why he did this he died with in 24 hrs

maybe some sort of gas buildup in its intestines? Just a shot in the dark. If he was flothing up without swimming up you wouold assume something was lifting him up? just a shot in the dark.

Liver necrosis.
Elasmo species have a large liver (in comparison to body size). It's oil soaked and replaces the air bladder for control of position in the water column.

Disrupted liver function (over active or under active) can create problems maintaining buoyancy in the water.
