Also, native driftwood is notorious for staining your water. You may get the look you want, but you won't be able to see the color as well due to your brown water.
 
Madrona wood is a great hardwood that has interesting twisty branches, If you gather it yourself bead blast the bark off then cure it in a warm dry place before soaking it.

Madrona huh? Just happen to have a fallen madrona in my back yard! Think I'll cut it up this weekend! Thanks for the tip Guppy!
 
Never heard of it. How do I bead blast it?
A small sandblaster with polishing beads (usually glass). here are a couple pictures of the tree (Arbutus menziesii).
It is often used for bird perches

i took drift wood out of a local pond and it worked great i just boiled it for a couple of hours first my water got foggy for maybe a week then cleared right up.
