Trickle Filter V Matrix Filter

^again maybe my inexperience but when i google wet/dry i find pictures of manufactured sumps that look pretty much like the glass one in the OP.
I'm deffinatly missing something aren't I?
would you be kind enough to define "matrix filter".
(while writing this i'm thinking i don't really want to know the answer because i'm confused enough about choosing the right filtration for my 210gal, reading and taking advice on here i decided a BIG canister and a smaller sump, now there's more than one sump system!! where does it all end?)
