This came up briefly in another thread and I thought I would post this up to hear what others though.

I currently run a Reeflow Barracuda on my central system. Now...to not confuse the situation, the pump itself is super quiet. I believe the sound is coming from the actual pumping of the water. Because the pump is externally plumbed to my sump, I think that the sound of the impellar/water is amplified through the sump giving me the wah-wah noise. I can hear the noise upstairs, but it is REALLY apparent in the bathroom, which is located just above the pump/sump combo. I put a large piece of foam over the sump to act as a lid/sound dampener, but to little avail on the noise issue.

Any thoughts or tricks to reduce the noise? I'm guessing I might have to sound proof the entire fish room.

Is the area your pump is in closed or open? I saw one thread where a guy used insulation (pink wall and ceiling insulation) at the back, sides, and front of his stand to quieten down everything. You might want to replace a foot or so of the input and output of your sump with flexible pvc.

My pump is not nearly as loud as my sump and overflow so I have some work to do as well. It's not unbearable but I would like it to be almost silent since it's in my dining room.

If I read that correctly your pump is on the outside of your sump? If so, why cant it be submerged in your sump?

These pumps are not submersible. His is similar to the reeflo dart that I use.

You are the one that made me post this with the flex PVC comment. I might try that. I'll post up a pic of how it's setup. I just want to make sure that when I close up the are, that I won't have to get in there and redo everything.

I sorta thought so. I haven't been able to find any flex pvc in my area but when / if I do I will be redoing some plumbing.

I also found a pretty good temporary fix to use in the mean time. ;)

What about some pipe insulation too?

The sound appears to be coming from the sump. Somewhat like a megaphone. I might try dialing back one of the ball valves and see what that does.

You know, it might have something to do with the head height of the tanks as well. Looks like I might need to start working on redoing the plumbing. That might help as well.
