Why not a Dovii? Aren't they just like Jaguar and Umbee?

Those many aggressive fish in that small a tank will most likely result in death of the smaller fish. I would not keep a dovii male with a trimac male (unless the tank is crazy big, with lots of hiding spots for the smaller fish).

For me male convicts have worked for a while (some 2-3 months, some 3-4 months before I had to take them out) -- maybe you can have try them?

Yes I am upgrading to 180G tank in the next month or two so there will be plenty of room for them.

My female Trimacs wouldn't tolerate tankmates... my male was much tougher and more aggressive than the females... I didn't waste time trying with him...

I did keep a breeding pair of Convicts with my Trimac pair for a while. The Convicts had a lot of places they fit into that the Trimacs didn't, although the Trimacs proved that they could life/love some pretty darn big rocks chasing the convicts. My male Convict lasted a while but my females kept trying to slirt/spawn with the male Trimac which commonly resulted in death.

The fish you could consider keeping with a Trimac... anything in the Amphilophus or Parachromis family... but keep in mind they will likely challenge one another and very possibly to the point of injury or death... Putting a Ram with a Trimac is just making an expensive feeder... The Trimac is more likely to fight with other Cichlids than a Clown Loach, but if the Trimac is ever bored a Clown Loach will be fun to "play" with (but the CL won't like the way the Trimac "plays").

In my opinion/experience... Trimacs and the like are best kept as single "Wet Pets" or as pairs... they just aren't cut out for community tanks...

I doubt even a 180G is big enough for tankmates with a trimac.

I have a male Trimac in a 150 gal alone.
My female Trimac killed the first male I had.

I have the female Trimac in a 180 with a male RD/Midas and four SD's.
The female Trimac doesn't seem to care about the SD's, but she will chase the RD/Midas during feeding time and he is submissive. It doesn't seem to bother him and he is able to get away, but I am keeping an eye on them. I am hoping he will outgrow her and become dominant or hold his own at least.

Trimac's are my favorite fish, and may end up being my only fish, but that is the price you pay for a beautiful, badass, glass banger.

I owned a 3.5" trimac that took over a 180gallon in pretty much 1 hour. Tank mates at the time were a Female Festae, a male Jag and an escondido.

Escondido died almost instantly and the festae would have died within another hour if I didnt take out the Trimac.

I very seriously doubt 180 will allow for tankmates based on personal experience and from the experiences others have shared.

i read an article years ago about a pair of trimacs that started off in a tank with a pair of dempseys(while small),killed those and then went on to demolish a pair of midas in another tank before they was given a tank of their own and then eventually the male lived on his own after committing murder again,it made interesting reading all the same
