Surprisingly after all the killing and aggression, the male has mellowed out and become very parental. Both take turns cleaning fry. There are about 600 in the back of the pot.

Nice. I'm amazed by this. My 10" male is a complete freakin' BEAST, but around his fry and his female he's the gentle giant. Lol
My 2nd batch of eggs hatched last night but the fry from the first batch devoured the new fry. Oops. I figured that's what would happen but I don't have anywhere for the older fry to go yet. So now they got a vitamin boost I guess.
Keep us posted as the pair progresses James.

Parental care seems to outweigh territorial aggression. They seem to be born with it. This is their first attempt with almost 100% fertility and great care. Most of my breeders take a try or two at it first before getting it right.

Yeah my Trimacs first attempt resulted in pretty much the same thing. I haven't bred as many species as you have James, but what I have bred have done decent relatively quickly but none as well as the Trimacs. It's funny because hyper aggressive Amphilophus do well right away(I've bred Red Devils and Trimacs and their first batch, both pairs proved to be outstanding parents) IME.

Yea, I think it's just the individual pairs. I've had aggro Midas take a couple attempts and I have a Hog pair on their third try now. I had an eight inch pair of Cubans take 4 tries after being extremely bonded for years. I've had very few first attempt spawnings.

That why this pair surprised me!
