Trimac question

My Trimac just claimed his first victim about 20 minutes ago. He killed an Argenae.

I got him at a lfs that's is on Rapp's site as one of the stores that carries his stock. However I did not ask specificly if that's where it came from. He does only have three spots (TRI-maculatus) faint bars on occasion and a nicely colored pink belly, no "KOK" to speak of yet but a hint of a lump. I would not want I fish that looks like sombody guled an orange golf ball on it's head. He's now about 3", 2 when I got him. I'm cool with him solo if that's what needs to be. I do have one other question. I'm a little fanatical with water changes. Keeping Discus for so many years I do 50% water changes twice a week. The discus are in three 90's. Could this guy handle 50% monthly or is that not enough?

Man they eat a ton. I would probably do a minimum of 50% every other week. That is a minimum. I'm doing about 75% a week on my tank, but it is overstocked atm.

There is no way to say definitively (except look at the fish pic. and guess) whether its a pure fish or a hybrid. Unless, you have got it from some good source.

50% monthly, done for a long term, will most likely kill the fish :) I suppose 50% weekly on the 110? You can safely do more I think (and will have to as the fish grows in size).

I have no problem doing more. They do eat constantly I imagin while young the appatite is also increased as they GROW and GROW. I've always had my Discus and Altums, this is my first venture into BIG BAD fish, I have to say it's very cool. Maybe next I'll give a Dovii in a 150 a shot ( MY WIFE ISN'T LOOKING). :naughty:

With water changes you either need larger volumes more frequently or small amounts if going long periods of time. The only way large volume changes work is if the water params are near the same. With going long periods the water parmas will drift and not likely be near that of the water you are changing with.

It is doubtful that you could get away with monthly changes, best to just get used to doing weekly for the health of the fish.

I do a 50% water change weekly on my SA/CA tanks. Every now and then I have to skip a week and feel guilty as can be until it's changed.

He killed an Argenae? :grinno:

I would think you can get away with puting a midas in with him. male trimacs can get nutchul humps but it will not be as perverse as the ones on flower horns, also not near as large as thous on reddevils. the more w/c the better, also bigger is better 2

Sorry Argentea.

You know the funny thing with Trimacs I have had is that when I would change more than 30% of its water-it would go to the top of the tank and breathe heavily-one time almost looked like it was going to die-I don't know what it is about that type of fish but I have had several in my lifetime and they all do that. Personally, I never do more than 30-35% water changes at one time-I feel it is dangerous. Instead do changes twice a week.
