Yes, I agree - and I think I have seen her colors best with the current (sand) substrate.
 
I saw some of these at petsmart today for like $5 and really liked them, I had no idea they were trimacs, they were called "three spot cichlids" I wanted to get one but don't really have room for it right now. If I got a 3-4" one could I keep him with a 6" jd and two 4-5" convicts? in a 30gallon?

No and the "trimacs" that Petsmart sells are flowerhorns.
