So I was daydreaming the other day about dream tanks and in the future I would love a trimac. I know they do the best alone, or that's what I'm lead to beleive, but if I was to add one other cichlid to a large tank, what would be a good tank mate?

If you are looking for a tropical tank mate a zebra danio is one of the best they are extremely fast and agile and wont be caught by a trimac. If you are lookin for a cichlid tank mate you should go for a female trimac or a midas, make sure you introduce the trimac first to the tank so it can establish dominance over it. A trimac pair would need a tank close to 120 gallons, a trimac with a midas would need a tank close to 150 gallons, and a male trimac by itself would need at least a 75 gallon.

"The dream" is a 180 in my at home office. Is there anything else aggression wise for another single large cichlid? I've never been a fan of the way Midas and Red Devils look. Would a female trimac with another "smaller" species work? (Heard females get more 10-12 in while males get up to 15). Smaller parachromis or maybe a large male Texas/carpintis? Or flowerhorns... Don't know a lot about them just that they are a hybrid of trimac and others.

Though on second though, a breeding pair of trimacs solo in a 180 would be fun I guess.

No flowerhorns are not good mix with anything. a male would do good with a festae. I wouldn't recommend having a female without a male, its just strange. the thing about festaes are that the females are much prettier than the males and are quite timid so i think you should just go with a 150+ size tank with a trimac and a festae

My boy had a 125 with a 12" male Trimac with a female, pair of RTM and a jaguar and there was no issues for months. I was quite shocked that he had no issues. It's so true how cichlids can have totally different personalities.

Long run over stocked for sure. I mean it's not happening now but atm I'm leaning toward a festae or a RTM.

I am also interested in someday owning a Trimac in my 150. Any chance a green terror or a carpintis might work with one?
