Trimac with?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I didn't get an up or down on the carpintis so idk. I'm planning on having GT in my largest dream display tank (dividing living and dining room) with other mid-sized cichlids like JD. Think festae is the same as a red terror and that got a thumbs up though.

The day dream continues as I learn about more and more fish =P how would a trimac and a black nasty work out?

Nandopsis haitiensus (the black nasty) is best kept in a single species tank.
They come from an island where there are no other species of cichlids, so they tend to either kill any other species, or die of stress related disease if they can't.
They also prefer higher temps then most other cichlids are comfortable in.
On the island of Hispaniola where they are endemic, water temps are usually recorded in the mid to high 80s, and into the low 90s,( http://www.cichlidae.com/article.php?id=55) these temps are perfect for the growth of the bacteria that causes ducklips.

Long run over stocked for sure. I mean it's not happening now but atm I'm leaning toward a festae or a RTM.
RTM FTW! but you only need a 75 for one, and they IMO are above Managuensis but below Dovii, point is probably would have to be solo. And a big male Green Terror is hard to beat by any other cichlid in color

So I was daydreaming the other day about dream tanks and in the future I would love a trimac. I know they do the best alone, or that's what I'm lead to beleive, but if I was to add one other cichlid to a large tank, what would be a good tank mate?

I have a 150g and have wanted a trimac. But I wanted a community more. Trimacs are possibly one if the most aggressive cichlids and you might have trouble keeping anything else with it. You could do a pair, but make sure you have a divider ready. What might work are a small school of silver dollars. Any danios might become feeders. Never under estimate aggressive cichlids.
Besides trimacs have so much personality you won't be bored w/ a single or pair. Now if you want to mix w/ others I suggest a 200-300g tank.

You need a bigger tank, or another tank, to do a Trimac with other fish. It'd work out great when the fish are 4 inches, 6 inches, maybe even 8 inches. But after a year or two, the fish become adult or late adolescent, they don't tolerate neighbors well anymore.

But, after a year, you've had the fish since they were tiny, they're starting to look really awesome, you won't want to get rid of them. You won't want to make "the decision" when it comes time to decide who has to go. You sure won't want to bring an adult specimen to some fish store where they'll give you "store credit" for it, and sell it to whoever asks for it first, no matter how small their tank or great their ignorance. You'll have to wait a while to re-home it here, may have to ship it, etc. So you probably won't

You'll either hope against hope that they'll get over it, stop fighting, stop chasing others constantly, whatever the issue--or you'll buy another tank and split 'em up. So just buy another tank now before you get the fish.

These fish are mean. And they get meaner--not nicer--as they mature.

Not "others" so much as "other". One single fish. I do want a very very large cichlid community tank some day too though (like 1000 gallons). Still a ways off though.
