Trimacs hard to find?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well since your in NY and and hes in NJ you might be able to pick up if hes alright with it but shipping I would think would be really cheap since hes so close. You will be hard pressed to find bad reviews with him, hes a great vendor.

Many LFSs wouldn't stock trimacs because they might buy 10 and before they sell them, one kills the rest, and any other fish in the tank.
Also it would be hard to know if you were getting a real one, because the species is so corrupted with hybrid genes. Rapps would be the way to go, where you are, and you would be sure of getting the real thing from him.
The name trimaculatus means 3 spot.

During spawning the females get quite varied.

Also if you have a group of friends that find something they want from a vendor, you could do a group buy and share the costs of shipping. If you keep cichlids long enough you'll realize that sometimes you have to pay a bit more to get what you truly want. Since Flowerhorns are sometimes sold as Trimacs, buying from a trusted person can be the best way to get what you are really after. Many times the extra cost is well worth it.

Um you are in NYC? or Upstate NY

Sharks Aquarium in Hillside, NJ currently has a Hoss of a Male maybe 8-9."

Absolutely Fish in Clinton gets them a lot, but they don't use Rapps.

Rapps, overall is solid, however I've seems some mixed batches of his stuff. So I can't say it's always what you expect. More so than not, it probably is a good fish.

Now onto Trimacs, most people have really weak strains. A lot not so knowledgeable people try to pass off Flowerhorn/Trimac Hybrids as Trimacs. And in my own Opinion, those "pyro" Trimacs are a type of line breeding that is encouraging non True Trimacs. The Fishlaw guy all be it, has wonderful looking fish. But, Wild Trimacs don't look to much like these "pyro" ones. Pyro being the exuberant levels of Red in the throat area.

This is my F-0 Wild Trimac

Thanks. It's a she, probably the meanest fish I've owned. That Zonatus I sold off, I took him and him healed him up. I didn't think they would pair up, but they did. Crazy, she didnt lay eggs.

Now she's with 6 female convicts and a young salv. All is well, she has too many fast targets to ever cause an issue. I can't keep dithers at all she just blasts anything, other than small cichilds like (f) cons and the lighting quick salv is untouched as well.

I live in western ny. Just outside of Rochester. It seems like everybody on here has a lot of respect for Jeff Rapps. I'm not looking for a trimac right away as I'm am pretty stocked as it is, but when I get a house soon and more tanks, it's on! I just wanted to get an idea for the future and like I said earlier, I just haven't seen them anywhere and I do have some good LFS' around. They definitely seem to be one of the more rare cichlids out there. Btw, awesome looking fish!

I'm not saying he's bad at all, I just know a couple people who didn't have as a good of an experience as most. Prob just a fluke. But if I were you I would take the Drive and call around to any of those places, Just get a bucket and battery air pump. I personally like seeing what I'm buying. Sharks has an amazing amount of fish in stock. From electric Eels, Pima's, Huge Wolf Fish, Peacock Bass, 2' Clown Knife, 12" Black Piranha's lol. Tons of Pikes, pretty much everything. I was just there Saturday and saw the recent stuff. George, the owner deals online a lot and being 15 minutes from Newark Airport he can import/export a lot.

Thank you for the other options. To be honest, I would probably just take the drive to pick them up. I feel the same way about seeing them Before buying them and living in NY where piranhas are illegal, I would have to take the drive if I ever wanted to get some lol.
