Trimacs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a large trimac probably around a 12+ inches. he is a beast. Very interactive fish. housed in a 125 gallon. Great personality... but 6 of the last 8 sundays he has decided to eliminate one of his tank mates. Every monday I wake up to the carnage. He loves to dig and rearrange my tank. eats everything, great when I am doing the lawn really loves the grasshoppers.

The Trimac is my absolute favorite.
The older they get the more aggressive they become.
Even during spawning the male will kill the female if they are left together.
Howerver, they can be kept with Silver Dollars and a large catfish like a rafael cat.

They are very interactive and will greet you when you approach the tank. Mine would eat out of my hand and he loved to have his belly rubbed.

I consolidated tanks and made the mistake of putting five bronze cory cats in the tank with him. The next morning 4 cory's were gone and the fifth was lodged in the Trimac's mouth. He ended up getting fungus/bloat from the internal damage from the corys.

My advise is to keep a single specimen.

Beautiful Trimacs! My favorites as well.

Shame about the corys that happened to a Jag I had once, yet another lesson I learned the hard way.

Nice fish! That really sucks about the cories, I've heard of that happening to a few nice fish :(

In the 17+ years I have kept fish, I've realized that I really enjoy breeding them, so I will most likely end up with at least a pair. I currently have a pair of midas, and a pair of jags, so I am no stranger to the kind of hell bigger cichlids can raise!
