I am glad it worked out, for future reference the tail would of healed on its own, just with time. My dats go threw it all the time, aggression is high the big guys have split tails, when the tank is mellow all the fish are fine.
I have seen this method used with Asian Aros in regard to gill plate curl, they just trim the curl and it grows back to normal.

I have seen tigers kept in a comm and after they have been sold and kept on their own for a few months the tail grew back fine others even after 1 year the tail was still split
You say who would cut the tail in the wild well it wouldn't happen in the wild as the wild is much bigger than a glass tank
As for knocking the fish out before cutting this is also not needed with tigers as all tigers go completely stiff when removed from the water making them very easy to work with
You done the righ thing by cutting if the tiger was on his own for a long time and it didn't heal then chances are it needed to be cut
