I lost at least half of my 1.5" fry keeping them in a 30G. They were just too aggressive to be in that small of an area. Things were fine once I put them in a 125, even after I added more.

I put maximun 40 of my 1.5 fry in my 30g for more than 1 month before they were sold with no issues.....actually they dont look that many until I actually count them in there...also tried 30 in my 10g for a while with no problem (not recommend that, just FYI,filter of 30g: 1 ac50, 1 sponge, 1 internal; filter of 10g 1 ac20 and 1 sponge)

My losses were strictly related to aggression. Filtration was perfect.

I can't remember exact numbers but, I saw 30+ adult Tropheus in a 40 gal breeder with an aquaclear and no substrate. I think you will way more than 15 to start them in a 30 gal.

Think of mbuna and how you need to over crowd them. If they are not overcrowded you will lose many to aggression and/or bloat.


PS The Tropheus were his breeding group and they produced many fry for him. Search some of my older (really old) posts for more accurate details.

I figured I would probably need more than 15, but I wanted to see what others might have to say. I will keep the overcrowding in mind. What would be a good size to order them at?

Everyone has different expieriences with tropheus, there are just WAY too many factors to keep in mind when being successful......with how many, tank size, M/F ratio, feeding, water quality, etc...... I really don't think there is 1 solid specific way to keep these fish with 100% success and have no problems at all......just my 2 opinion
