I am thinking about a fairly large 500-1000g outdoor/maybe indoor tropical fish pond. What I would like to know is what large fish type would be able to be outside in this pond.

Water temps are the big thing to look at. How cold does it get where you are? Keeping tropicals outdoors in the summer nonths is easy enough, but when you have a frozen over pond in the winter few tropical fish can survive.

You would'nt really be able to see and enjoy the fish if the pond is in ground.Looking down on them would'nt give you much of a visual unless you keep something with a flat body like stingrays or maybe some type of large catfish. Then you would have to keep the water warm enough year round,at least 78 degrees. That's one reason Koi really work well as pond fish.

It gets that cold in Louisiana? Washington State get that cold (30s) in the winter. RARELY do we fall below that (it does happen).

As the previous poster said, many hobbyists have tried the pond and have disliked the results. The fish look drab when viewed from above.

More than one heater :l

I have a tropical fish pond that is about 500g with bala's And a blue channel. The biggest factor is keeping it heated at night, i use 4, 300WATT heaters to keep it 75F at night and 85F in the mourning+

And I live in CA so it doesn't get to cold. Well not enough to freez over and I have more then enough heaters I am sposed to only have two but I have four for more controll
