  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They mostly freak durring feeding if one of my other fish hit thr watrt hard near them or the occasional nipping. The main difference between the florida gar and tropical gar is price. Have also read tropical gars can be aggressive. Have never kept one so I have no idea how true that is but I know the florida gars are very dosile.

I'm in Ontario as well. Where exactly are you getting a trop? I've wanted one for a long time, but I've never been able to find them in Canada.

Edit: Sorry, took me a second to remember who Jeff Rapps is. It'll be over $500 to get a single specimen to Canada, and there may be other fees as well. If you can drop that kind of scratch on a single fish, a bigger tank shouldn't be out of the question.

ok folks. Money is absolutely nothing. It's the space. My house is sorta crammed and my parents don't want to squeeze a bit more space for a 5 foot tank.. I will persuade them though. Is $275 cheap then??

My dad works in the states so I will plan to ask him to bring the gar over. DO I NEED A PERMIT??? not in CITES right?

You need a 180 gallon (6' x 2' x 2') at minimum.

They're not CITES listed, but you still might need a permit; it's time for you to email someone in Canada's Customs about it.

When they were last available they were significantly cheaper than $275. As far as bringing the gar over the border you will have to declare it at customs when crossing. You will have to pay taxes on the gar as well. I would also suggest that whoever is bringing the gar across the border brings printouts of the laws regarding bringing ornamental fish into Ontario as well as the list of species where a permit is required to bring them across the border. Gars are not on the list of species where a permit is required, but I would have this just in case so you can prove that everything is being done correctly.

thanks I did it with bichirs in the permits. So all I need to go is go the the customs website and printout the 'approved" permit of the fish from where ever the tropical gar is from?? where are the gars from??

for example i printed out a sheet for my bichirs

fish from congo: approved

is that the only thing i need?

Tropical gars are from Mexico.

I'm having a hard time finding it right now, but back in december the government came out with a list of species that for various reasons were deemed that they could be a threat to the native environment. Most of these fish would then require a permit to import except for certain fish if kept as a pet. Gars did not require a permit to import. Ministry should know this, especially if you have the scientic and common name.
