Tropical Gar on the Way!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are farm raised, I would bet big $ they will take pellets immediately. I wouldn't even bother with live if I were you. congrats!! I wonder if these are from the same farm that H2O got them from? any white ones?!?!?!
I'd love to some wild stock from south of costa rica...

Unless otherwise specified, which I may have missed, the gar are almost certainly only going to accept live without some starving or employment of another method. Oddball mentioned a method that he had a lot of success with somewhere. I would fatten them up on gut loaded feeders to fatten them up before trying to make then accept tilapia. In the event that they were previously trained that might not apply, and even if they were it might be the best way to get them to eat. First step to recovery is clean water, second is getting them to eat some quality food.

All of the the aquacultured gars have been pellet trained ,because there are just too many little fish to feed them with anything else. The gar that don't learn to accept the pellets at a very early age either die from starvation, or they get cannibalized by siblings that have outgrown them because they learned to eat the pellets that were offered and continued to grow. Sink or swim. Lol.

How have the gars adjusted? Anymore pics? What are they living with now?

They're adjusting really well. I've been keeping their bellies full of jumbo carni-sticks :p

One of my Florida gar has a case of cloudy eye, so I'm dosing melafix at the moment.

They are currently living with a handful of Polypterus ranging from 7"-15", 3 clown loaches, and a Raphael catfish. Love these little guys!

There's the full tank shot. I'll be breaking it down to scape my 300 in a few weeks. I've been Teflon taping PVC all day. Huge pain in the ass, good God
