Yes, that pic is a spotted gar. Here's a tropical gar. I can't get a good pic the top of my gar's head. Tropical gars have a prominent "trident" (3-tine pitchfork) marking on top of the head.

keep in mind the trident pattern will fade out for the most part as the t-gar gets older, so it can primarily be used as a diagnostic with younger tropical gars. you can see a variety of pictures of tropical gars on the site that i maintain:

you can also make comparisons to all the other species of gars.

in terms of behavior, it is variable, they are aggressive feeders, but none of the 5 i have kept ever started attacking gars bigger than they were. in fact, the Cubans i have are the most aggressive gars i have kept. again, personality with gars will vary with the individual--
