Tropical Gar

Going by my trops I'd have to recommend a wider tank. My female trop is pushing the 30" mark and the male isn't far behind. Mine are uncaring of a scaped tank or bare tank (they've been in both at one time or another). So long as the water is clean and the food is on time, they're fine with anything.

Out of curiosity, did you buy them at a larger size or grow them out from YOY gars? I haven't come across many on here at the size you mentioned which is why I ask.

a while back jeff rapps had some but i have not seen any for sale for a while i guess us gar keepers are a rare breed lol

those were a bit high priced and they just dropped off after a while. i could have got some after that, but they were really high priced...i mean $600 each at 7"...i almost got on from rapps.

last time he had them they was priced at $250 i think. i have not seen any more though

ya rapps had them at $250. i have other connections, but those that were at $600 was from this other sorce. funny thing was he didn't know all gars were illegal in his state. so i informed him about the possible ticket and how i could save him from it but not at that price. as he read this email i sent him about this "salvation" i offered a customer walks in. he stops and goes to help him with some fish. turns out it was an undercover fish and game officer and the officer took his trop gars and wrote him a ticket for them. the officer is the reason i don't have them, he pitched the deal that i would take them and i am out of state, but the officer didn't go for it so i was out the gars. from what we understand, transshipping fish that are illegal to posses in store is still ok. i was so close yet so far.

not a trop but a cospecies. i plan on a 3' deep tank for my cuban over the next few years at 2 hes in the 16" bracket. so a 2' tank would last awhile ( longer then what most people call a awhile in the fish world ). imo 2' is barely okay for floridas and spotteds... everything else really needs 30"+ they all get that big or bigger in the wild, rarely do they seem to get close to their wild sizes even in larger outdoor ponds and oversized tanks. But for a fish that is like a swimming stick the wider tank really should be provided if possible. just my 2 cents on it. Ive seen 4-5 yr old floridas in 125s... they live, but it doesnt look comfortable imo. always bumping their snouts and rubbing them on the glass.

dang wonder how much the fine was i wish gars was legal in more states

he still has two weeks before they file deadline i have been checking in with him on how it went and some of the stock he has as i am looking for a few species still in my condense while expanding mode.

something i have noticed is that my gars will only rub there snouts when the nitrates are high. something that i have yet to figure out is why my gars have started to rub their nose on the center brace. i have an old oceanic tank with an oversized glass center brace. now that my tank water level has gone up with my sump overflow addition, my water is about 1" from this brace. they can still come up an breath fine without touching it, but for some reason they now will come up and hold their nose out of the water to touch it. they will some times just poke it and other times rub all over it. i have no idea what they are doing with that. the only one not to do it is my cuban.
