Tropical pond for a cold climate.....

Hi

does any one know of or have any experience of building an outdoor tropical pond in a colder climate? Is it possible?

I would love to have a go...but need to know if it is feasable here in blighty.....!

Depends on what type of pond you are attempting to build....above ground or below ground?

I want to run it all year......8ft by 5ft for some monster catfish, around the 28 degC mark. Im figuring it will have to be covered somehow in the winter....

I tried this some years ago with a small 300 gallon stock tank. I made a cover that went over the pond it was insulated and had a few windows. It was 3 foot high by 8 foot square and had plastic covering the inside. It worked somewhat but it just sucked $$$ trying to keep it warm enough. If i where to do it again i would make sure to insulate the sides of the pond.

There are heaters you can buy but it will cost $$ to run them.

The deeper the pond the better. Water falls are great but they aid in cooling the water. I would try making a cover out of something. Maybe some of that 2" thick insulating styrofoam at Home depot?

Its possible. Insulate the hell out of it and put the heaters on the bottom.
