Tropical pond in Temperate areas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well tanking into account all the insulation ...the brick/wall prob take up alot of the room so i don't wanna go to crazy will be about 600G useful swimming space.

will be tropical ....decor will be sand bottom with 1 big peice of bog wood ....

will use under water lighting also, huge pond filter/UV sterilizer . under the tank will be dug into the ground about 10inch or so with sand/insulation so the bottom doesn't tear against the wooden box kinda thing.

heating bill will be a big deal but with all the heavy insulation i don't see a major problem..
.all together will cost around... £400 which isn't alot concidering the price of a 800G indoor glass tank/filter.

see what the temp of its going to be but idealy would like some kinda aro/p.bass the footprint restricts me a little but will deffo be understocked!

not sure if anyone has ever done this in UK before? lol i have 9month more planning to concider all problems....hopefully!

Sounds good princess. I think necrocanis did a thread about a pond in cold weather. Might want to check it out.

Hey King Edward.

Can you bump this up against the house or a heated portion of the garage, then keep the filter & heater in there and just pump clean/heated water back out.

What do you have available for heating ? Gas, oil or electric?

Your going to need about 6" of Stryofoam all the way around, and you will have to vent the top.

No, cant bump it up against the house sadly...gonna have to rely on insulation with a capital I. Theoretically it should be possible to make an outdoor pond that uses less leccy than an indoor tank...if you do it right, but I just look at my track record and laugh! Thinking about how to make an insulated lid that will let some light in...Try and find some old double glazing maybe?

How are those Steel Bins working out?

Steel Bins? Steel bin would be more appropriate...I got a little carried away with the anglegrinder...those sparks get relly hot...not a good mix with deisel....but on the bright side the scrap payout nearly paid for both!

The one is gonna be a goldfish pond...its the galvanised one and people say they are toxic...but it is 10yrs plus, but it needs to wait till I have done this pond for these pacu...jee they grow kinda quick! They still have a couple of months in the 180. This pond I'm thinking 12' by 12' by 3' poss 4'...that should do them and my TSN for a while...

See I was gonna do another indoor pond for them, about 750 gallons in the lounge, but once laid out it kinda cramped the room and I started thinking seriously how I'd get the kids out of it?!?! So I got a 180 glass tank. Bargain second hand marine tank, but its gonna be freshwater till I get some money!

Okay, so heres the plan, 4by4's bolted together with ends overlapping alternatly to form a box 12' by 12' by 4'. This will be lined with polystyrene sheet, then apondliner put in, and I'll worry about the lid later..

I have a couple of spots I can put it. I dont want to do too much ground work. The first is a flat bit of garden, the soil here is really sandy, so I dont know if that will casue issues.

The second is a 'patio' I use the term very lightly. The flagstones are poorly laid and very uneven...I was thinking of putting the frame down, dropping a ton of sand in to level the base, the insulation then lining... Sound like a plan?

Perfect time to redo the patio and get a good base for the pond.

As long as you avoid run off from the roof ....

There is transparent fiberglass panels available, make a double glazed cover out of them.

No pix!!!? If you could only see the disappointment in my eyes :(
