trouble getting the gar off live

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should be able to give it some feeders while trying to convert to non-live.

With both of my spotted gars I found very diff. Tastes. The older of the two charlie likes shrimp and wont eat anything but if.he has.ot his way, where as eddie, the younger of the two, eats everything from pellets, frozen silver sides, feeders and so on, except the shrimp.. With both, I found that persistance was the key, I just stayed with a routine and they gave in.

Honestly, I would just continue feeding your gars what ever they are eating at this point. At there current size it's better that they eat than to have them eating what you want them to eat. I have found that when gars are about 12" in length, they can be trained to take almost any food you might want them to feed on more easily. My gars have gone from feeders (at around 3" to 8-11") to pellets and cut up fillets (12" to 16") and now I feed them lake smelt. I can get lake smelt at around $1.29 a pound so it's more economical for me with all my gars.
I would give your gars some more time before breaking them off of live food.

i have just recently acquired 2 3ft gator gars and i am problems gettin them 2 eat anything other than live fish... ive tried silverslides.they jus looked at as a dead fish. Ive tried tilapia filets they appeared interested but did not bite it and left in the tank for a while until i took it out. I will keep trying tho. I really dont like feeding them goldfish. Id rather get fish from a pond or a lake and feed them that and keep there main diet a nice variety of pellets if i can and frozen. thanks for all the info tho.
