Trouble getting young Stingray to eat.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Someone telling you it ate 2 ghost shrimp a day don't mean squat unless you seen it for yourself. That's not enough food for a ray that size and not often enough like T1 stated. Always try to see the ray eat in person or a video. If the ray was heathy and eating then the person selling the ray should have had no problem doing this for you. All the above info was good to get you started. Research first buy after when possible! If you don't know how to divide a tank then you may have not have done enough research for the care of a ray. Rays are not your average fish and require more care and techniques then just dropping it in the tank and feeding it.

I have done a ton of research, but I have had a hard time finding info. And I wanted to get a stingray for over a year my tank was bought and set up for him. I used the fish to cycle the thank mostly and I researched them and they all should get along with the ray. I wanted to get a ray I could see but there is no pet store in the area that carries them so I had to order one from a distributor

Ask questions first , then buy the ray, I'm going to pretend I don't know what size tank you have, those rays are so difficult to get eating, and need months just eating tiny worms to have a chance to live. Who ever sold it to you should have asked what size tank and sent you a video of it eating .
Next time you want one , ask here and read all the posts and threads on those rays

If you want him to survive you must get rid of all tankmates for now. He needs to be in the 125. He will die in the 10 gal. Then order a few lbs of.live blackworms. Also do you have a glass heater? If so it needs to be covered. You have a LOT of reading and work ahead of you if you want your ray to survive. Continue with questions but act fast! Also post pics of him

Thanks for all the info, I went to lows and got stuff to make a temp. Devider for the tank fish in one side ray in the other and gave him some food after he sedled in. I put in a 1/4 cube frozen brine shrimp and 1/4 cube frozen blood warms that where thowed and 3 very small prices of nightcrawler. He ate most of the shrimp and warms but the nightcrawler seemed to big he has also swam more. How much should he be eatting at this time And how often

I have a inline heater on my filters I didn't won't anything in the tAnk that could hurt him

1) Remove his tank-mates.. ALL of them

2) Get live blackworms.. for a 125 approx. 1/4lb... rinse them very well then spread them around the tank ( turn your filters off for about 15mins until the worms burrow down into the sand) You will need to do this 1x a week at first and as it picks up it appetite more often the goal it to keep food constantly available at least until it gains sufficient weight to start trying/adding other foods. Frozen bloodworms are not nutrient dense enough to help your ray ( they will slowly starve even while eating massive amounts)

3) get yourself a bottle of Prazi-pro ( you will need this once the ray has put on some weight and has acclimated to captivity. imo any and all wc rays should go threw a de-worming/ip process, they are silent killers and when used properly prazi is about as safe as salt.)

4) Do 25% WCS every 3 days ( doesn't matter your perameters the freah water is whats key, don't syphon your sand. Just remove from the top/mid level)

These are the basic steps I followed when I bought all 3 of my retics home ( I recently lost my smallest to a nasty columnaris outbreak unfortunately but the other 2 pulled threw and are thriving once again, though i'm pretty sure my female absorbed what would have been her first litter =/) That was over 2yrs ago now...

Be prepared for a larger tank... your ray even if a male will eventually need at least a 180 6'x2' footprint. And even larger if you have a female.

Retics can and are hearty ime once acclimated and their basic needs are met.

Live blackworms should get any young ray eating. I would also try the nightcrawlers again once you have him divided in his own area. He may have been stressed out by the other fish and wouldn't eat because of that.
