trout tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im getting small brook trout they should be like 3-4" and im trying to decide if i should just get one or two.

I am extremely happy to hear somone else thinking *in your case DOING* a trout tank!
We have a great population of german browns here in central oregon and I was dreaming of some day having the gumption and tank size for a trout tank!

GRats and would lov to see some picts@!!!

you would be best off with a brown trout, much hardier fish then the brookie. Can tolerate much wider range of water conditions including temp. give it about .5 to 1.0 substrate with a few flat rocks stacked up to simulate a ledge. Obviously a chiller where you will be able to keep your temp around 60-65F. Easy to do, the chiller is the only thing that makes it not more common. That and of course airate the water as much as you can.

as for what they will eat, Browns will eat basically everything. We feed the a straight pellet diet in the state hatcheries but you could feed them minnows, worms, etc. As for size all of the trout can reach very good size as long as they have the 2 things they need and the first being the most important as for size, food, and good water as for them not to be stressed out. The brook trout needs very cold water and it would just be much easier and realistic to try a brown.

ok ran in to an issue, i think my thermometer was broken, i just put on a few new ones to make sure the temp was good, and without any heaters, my whole tank is running at 76 degrees, and i know it is too hot for trout. are there any warm water species? what else is similar to trout and live really fast moving water? im stuck right now and not too happy. HELP

The warmest water trout is the Brown trouts.....but they get way too big for a 55g. , they max out at 40 inches. For a 55g with a powerheads and 76 degrees you could look into some Shoal bass (if you can find them) or some fallfish and or creek chubs (they all love the current and will be fun to watch) or maybe a mix as long as you dont overstock your aquarium.

i think im totally off the trout idea for now. im prob picking up an 8" Tilapia Buttikoferi just to fill it. someday i will get my trout tank, i just dont think it will be soon. sorry to anyone who wanted to see it
