Anyone on here keep trout?

Just wondering how tough it is to keep them healthy and if they seem to be worth it. The investment seems very high for a cooler, power head, etc to keep the fish healthy and happy. Anyone got them off live food?

Would also love to see your trout tank setups!

I currently have a Rainbow Trout. I keep him the basement currently. It sounds great to have them, but I wouldn't do it again. Not terribly exciting as far as personality goes. As far as keeping him, it really hasn't been to challenging, I just make sure to keep up on the water changes. He is on pellets right now...but he was pellet trained when I got him from the hatchery.

I'd love to eventually setup a wild brook trout tank and/or a massive Salmonid tank. The key is just to keep the water VERY well aerated and keep the temperature below 66 at all times no matter what and preferably below 60.

I kept juvi rainbows for a little while no issue. As for getting them off live food mine came already pellet trained. The only problem I had with them they were so incredibly boring. The dominant one was the only one that really swam around and was active. The other three hung in the slack water created by the power head

Had a foot+ long one from a hatchery was cool and active and came up to the front for pellets and made tight circles to spin and catch pellets. I live in Michigan and my house stays pretty cool all year round. Was a pretty cool fish I liked him a lot

I've kept Rainbow Trout as feeder fish for my bigger oddball predatory fish. Never had one die. 20 gallon long aquarium with a BIG filter. I empty the ice maker tray in the morning early every day in the tank. They are fine without the cooler temperatures though. I keep my house at 68℉ year round. They eat Hikari Carnivore Pellets that sink with no problem. Cannot keep anything smaller than a 2" goldfish with them ,or it becomes food. When I get down to about 4-5 Trout ,they get territorial and really aggressive with each other. If I take out the dominant fish, immediately another takes its place and starts bullying the others relentlessly. Very neat little fish. The ones I get are 4-7" long, and $1.29 each. A Mapco gas station has them for sale year-round. I've never had any problems keeping them alive or getting them to eat, ever. Thanks

Raised 10 trout from fry in my garage in a 125 no problem. Easy to keep, almost impossible to re home when they get big. (Fastest growing fish ive ever had. 6" by 6 weeks old) Lucky I have friends with DFG who helped me relocate them!
